The Corporate Governance Institute published a great article regarding how to think about your interest in board service. Are you absolutely at the top of your game in your day job? If not, don’t consider it. Do you want to use a great deal of your personal time for this essentially part-time job? If not, don’t consider it. Does your work schedule allow you to participate in the board work, even when an unexpected event (these do happen) occurs? Are you able to invest the time to be a good director (just the “average” board work takes 240 hours a year)? Do you truly understand the role of a director? If not, take some accredited courses and find out. And if you think it’s about glamour, don’t consider it—it’s just not for you.
